In LG Thomson’s work, the past is ever present. Using acrylic and mixed media, she contemplates ancient connections to and exploitation of the natural world, questioning the idea of nature as other, while meditating on the layering of time, memory, and folklore.

She is influenced and inspired by the flora, fauna and geology of the Highlands and is particularly fascinated by the sea, the creatures that dwell within it, and its shores, near and far. She is drawn to fragmented claws and limbs, dead crabs, and broken shells. Creatures that were once alive and are now destined to become grains of sand, much as we are destined to become no more than memories and dust.

Vessels

This work is an exploration of the pain, joy, and absurdity of human existence. Using acrylic and mixed media, LG Thomson considers the ways in which the past continually echoes around us and how life leaves its marks upon us.

Our bodies are vessels containing the past, living the present, holding a promise for the future. When the past is toxic, every other part becomes infected. The only cure is to purge the poison and hope we don’t destroy ourselves in the process.

We have to cut ourselves open and dig deep until we find the sore place. Whatever we find there we must expose to the light so that we can examine it and then creatively and honestly explore and express what we have found there.
